01.19.2010 – WASHINGTON, D.C. —— “The music of prosperity will sound out through drum beats to end poverty,” said Vikash Kumar, Executive Director of Microfinance Focus. He announced today an innovative new partnership: “Drumming An End To Poverty” (www.drumminganendtopoverty.org), a global Drum Circle to be broadcast the opening day of the Africa-Middle East Regional Microcredit Summit. The event will use the power of rhythm and the heart beat of community to raise awareness about microfinance as a means to end poverty. “These global drum circles will help raise funds to support the Microcredit Summit, the “Davos of the movement,” and microfinance programs around the world,” said Kumar. The Summit will be held in Nairobi, Kenya on April 7-10, 2010.

SODHAIDESA works to provide affordable medical care and preventive  health programs for Haitian Dominicans living in batey communities (originally sugarcane plantation housing) around Santo Domingo. In addition to running a low-cost clinic in the city, SODHAIDESA organizes volunteer doctors and health professionals to lead health workshops and human rights workshops and to make medical visits and deliver needed medicines to marginalized communities.  Born in Haiti, Dr. Compere immigrated to the Dominican Republic and hoped to use his medical skills to improve the health of Haitian immigrants and Haitian Dominicans in the Dominican Republic. It was with this vision that he founded SODHAIDESA.
